Hwang Jung-eum Faces Embezzlement Charges, 3-Year Sentence Requested

The Jeju District Prosecutors' Office seeks a 3-year sentence for Hwang Jung-eum, accused of embezzling 4.3 billion won through crypto investments.

Hwang, ex-member of Sugar, is charged with taking 4.3 billion won from company funds. A 3-year prison term is proposed.

Legal reports indicate the prosecutors asked for the sentence in Hwang's final trial for violating economic crime laws, presided by Judge Lim Jae-nam.

Hwang is accused of misappropriating 4.34 billion won, including 700 million won from Hunminjeongeum Entertainment, for crypto investments in early 2022.

Approximately 4.2 billion won was invested in cryptocurrency, while the rest covered taxes and other costs.

Hwang fully owns the family-run agency involved, where she is the only artist.

Hwang has confessed, repaying the advanced funds from Hunminjeongeum Entertainment by June 5, as documented in court.

Her defense requested leniency, claiming she intended company growth but mismanaged accounting. They state all funds are repaid and seek leniency due to no other victims.

Hwang's sentencing is set for 10 a.m. on the 25th of next month.
